Many of the students at my school struggle with focus and confidence in their academic abilities and many teachers face burnout from long stressful days. By using mindfulness on the mat through a yoga (mindful movement) and meditation practice it will help them become more aware, confident, and calm with themselves and the inner thoughts that constantly cloud the mind. The outside influences of social media, family, and community can stress children out at too young of an age, and this class will set them up with strategies that they can use throughout life to combat that pressure. As a new school counselor at Lazear, I am eager to bring the benefits of mindfulness and body awareness to the community. However, the school lacks the materials for teaching these skills and allowing students to participate properly and safely. In addition to the three mats I bought for my school and am using with individual students, I am requesting 20 more mats to complete the set in order to teach a full class, as well as a voluntary after-school class that I plan to hold for teachers and students. The foam rollers will be used for extra support, relaxing and restorative postures, and increasing body awareness. I am also requesting a singing bowl for focus, attention, release purposes. I have seen the sounds created from the bowl used as therapy for many troubled children, as well as adults. Finally, these books on mindfulness and peace will be used for classrooms, groups, and individuals to accompany these practices.
