If this project is fully funded, my students will have the opportunity to be in charge of their learning through choosing the book they will explore during an independent reading unit. High School students rarely have the opportunity to engage in student lead endeavors within the classroom. These carefully selected books will serve to enhance the interests and knowledge of cultural backgrounds within my student population. The list of books are written primarily by women or people of color. The books are as diverse as my students and they may feature sports or real life experiences. Almost all of these novels feature adolescent characters. Students are able to connect with the literature. The independent reading project will give the students the opportunity to share their experiences with several classmates in groups. Students will create their own reading calendar and meet each Friday to discuss their book. They will also have rigorous assignments to complete according to the themes and characters in their choice of novel. While the students meet in their small groups, I will circulate offering hurdle help, praise and brief assessments of their reading comprehension, interpretation, and analytical skills. Ultimately, my goal with this project is to foster a love of reading and create life long readers through choice books, which is what English should really be about.
