My wonderful students are from a low-income, harbor area in Southern California. Our entire student body receives free lunch, and yet they are the most endearing, appreciative children that I have ever met. Everyday, my fifth graders have to overcome the gang problems on the streets as well as other challenges that they are faced with at home. They are hard workers and strive to be the best. They truly are the best students in the world! Most of the children live in single-parent homes where their primary caregiver has a full-time job that keeps them out of the house for most of the day. Consequently, many students happily stay after school in our classroom to receive tutoring and to just have a quiet place to work. School is a safe place for them. I am proud to be part of their educational journey.
