I am looking to assist my students in becoming independent, fluent readers through the use of timers that will allow them to race against themselves. These timers will also afford them the opportunity to collaborate with their peers in an independent way that I am struggling to recreate outside of some group reading centers. I have seen success in a small group setting but struggle to demonstrate the abilities of students to continue being successful without my interaction. These timers will help to teach indepence and self-regulatory skills necessary to become independent readers. Our biggest competitor is always our own self.
