Think about a time as an adult you had a meeting at a coffee shop. Perhaps a Starbucks or a local spot nestled in your favorite neighborhood. Most coffee shops offer a variety or seating for adults to choose from including couches, high top tables, low tables, chairs and even outdoor seating. As an adult, we subconsciously choose the place that we think we will be the most productive in. This is the same for students, we just have to give them the opportunity! A couch and two high top tables will be a great addition to our flex space in our hallway and give that Coffee Shop feel to all of our students. Our 4th and 5th graders share this space to work on Project-Based-Learning, STEAM modules, and much more. Currently, they work on the floor, using clipboards to rest their work on. However, by adding these pieces of furniture to our space, students can work in a comfortable space that they can choose to meet their needs to ensure their best work is being done. According to Psychology Today, "classrooms designed to support participative learning increased student engagement compared to traditional row-by-column seating (Scott-Webber, Strickland, and Kapitula)." Building an environment that is designed for different styles of learning, such as high top tables for standing or sitting and a couch for a sitting in a relaxing environment, it is no surprise that our students can and will learn better!
