Safe Spaces, also called Cool-Down Spots, support social-emotional learning by helping kids pay attention to their feelings and learn how to manage them. With a "safe-spot" in our room, kids can take a break and decompress. Children are only able to learn within a context of safety and security. But for many children in our city of Schenectady, neither their homes or certain environments are safe places for maturing, much less learning. The incidence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their devastating impacts has only increased and are by no means restricted to specific socioeconomic or ethnic groups. Student trauma can stem from domestic violence; physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; poverty; divorce; or parental mental illness, incarceration, or substance dependence, all of which, unfortunately, are part of many of our students' realities.
