  • Students Choose: Traditional desk or FLEX-SPACE COMFY FLOOR SEATS?

    Funded Jul 3, 2019

Thank you for your donation to Donors Choose! My third grade language arts students are loving the "Comfy Floor Seats" that we use for independent work, partner and group work, and pleasure reading! It's wonderful for the students to get out of their hard, traditional chairs for a change of position and scenery! It's a much more relaxed atmosphere, and one where the kids are still working on assignments, research, and just enjoying a good book! These seats would not have been possible without your donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Swoboda

  • "Play Together now...Work Cooperatively in the Workplace"

    Funded Nov 27, 2018

Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom. My third grade students are really enjoying the Lakeshore reading games that you helped purchased.

We received six reading comprehension board games, eight "Can Do!" reading can games, and ten vocabulary folder games. The students use a few each day when their class assignments are completed. They love playing games with their friends and I love them working on reading skills at the same time!

Last week, we had a reward party where the students were able to bring board games from home to play, but I had students asking to play the Lakeshore Reading games instead! That shows how much they love them!

Thank you so much for your donation! I am currently brainstorming my next Donors Choose project, and am thinking of floor chairs for reading and working on the floor.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Swoboda

  • Let's Get InterACTIVE!!

    Funded Oct 30, 2018

Thank you so much for supporting my "Let's Get InterActive" project! When I first heard of Donors' Choose, I knew exactly what I wanted my grant to be, and I couldn't wait to get started on it. I teach in a small, rural school district where there is not a lot of money for technology, and I knew that if I ever wanted an interactive white board like the one I had while teaching at a large district, I was going to have to rely on the support of generous donors, like you!

When my students walked in after the Christmas break and saw the InFocus board on the wall, they were so excited! So after I explained that I was still learning how to work the board, I let them play to see some of the language arts games that are available. They had such huge smiles on their faces. Later, we used it to project a worksheet ,and that's when I heard the following comments: "Look, no shadows on the paper!" "There's no glare on it from the sun!" "We don't have to turn the lights off to read it!" "This is so cool!" "No one has to kneel down and write the answers on the board."

I am still learning on what all this wonderful InFocus board can do, and I look forward to our next teacher workday when I have time to play on it and find more fun activities to go with the lessons.

Thanks again, for the generous donation! My third graders are loving the InFocus board, almost as much as I am!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Swoboda

In today’s world, a successful classroom setting has moved away from giving "busy work" to keep students engaged until the next lesson begins. As a 3rd grade VERY energetic teacher, I feel students should have the opportunity to participate in activities that are relevant and meaningful to the subject they are learning and not just something to keep them occupied. While some students are great audio learners, and others are better visual learners, the images, text, audio and videos allow everyone to collaborate, which in turn brings improved understanding and performance in the classroom. When students are given the chance to use an interactive board, it allows everyone in class to enjoy learning in a style that meets his/her needs. Having an interactive board allows for quickly searching and implementing a vast collection of differentiated lessons to meet the needs of the students. Currently in my class, when students work at the whiteboard for skill practice, they must kneel down in front of the board, and try to write without causing a shadow over their work from the document camera. This type of practice is time-consuming, and it affects the attention span of the class. I've tried many times to upgrade to a digital board, but after Hurricane Harvey last year, our community and those in surrounding areas had to put the focus and time towards helping others get back on their feet. It has not been the right time to ask for something like this, when so many were struggling. I hope by the help of the Donors Choose Community and Rebuild Texas, my classroom vision will come true! I desperately want a tool that will keep my students eagerly wanting to come and participate during the lesson
