  • Calming Carpet!!

    Funded Aug 31, 2021

Thank you again for making it possible to have this beautiful carpet in our classroom. When the children saw it for the first time they were amazed! They could also see the joy on my face as well! I have been trying to create an environment that is calm and soothing for my students. This rug was a big piece that was needed in our room. We use it for both carpet times and doubles as our block center. The carpet also creates a visual space for each child to sit while we gather on the carpet during a whole group lesson.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gwaltney

This classroom project was brought to life by Horace Mann Educators Foundation and 8 other donors.
  • Remote Learning Resources

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Due to Covid 19 and remote learning, sharing these materials did not turn out the way we had hoped. The online activities were amazing and the pictures are always incredible! The magazines fell in line with the topics we teach in our classroom.

We were able to send home the hard copies in the learning bags we sent home twice a month with families. When we began in person learning we were able to look at the magazines together as a class and the children love taking them home!

The large teacher posters are amazing and I will keep for futures lessons as well. I enjoy getting to share the digital link with our remote students as well!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gwaltney

  • One, Two, Three See The Puppet Show With Me!

    Funded Dec 5, 2019

I'm not sure how we can possibly thank you for your generosity. Our entire class were excited when the materials arrived! It was like Christmas and our Donor, Horace Mann, brought in treats and got to see the children using the materials.

The children are enjoying using the puppets and having friends watch. Right now we have it as part of our book center which allows for children to act out the stories they have read. Having the puppet stand and puppets also creates another opportunity for children to communicate and problem solve. It also allows them to use their creative thinking when using the puppets to put on a show.

We will use it in the book center for awhile then we may move it to other centers and use the stand for other interest areas as well. The possibilities are endless and we are forever grateful.”

  • Books for Big Feelings!

    Funded Sep 6, 2019

These books have been amazing assets to our classroom! The children enjoy all of them and our administration have purchased the "Alphabreaths" for each classroom in the building!

We refer to the characters in the books all the time and the books are in an area of our room that we use for the children to calm down when needed. The children use techniques from the books to help when in conflict or distress.

We appreciate this program more than you know and are grateful for your generosity. Social Emotional Learning is so important and these books have helped us teach the skills our kids need to navigate through their day! Even neighbor teachers are borrowing the books!!”

  • Block Center Fun

    Funded Apr 4, 2019

Thank you so much for funding this project and making it possible to add some new items to our room. When I brought out the items so much excitement filled the room! I let the children help me open the boxes and we talked about what the toys were and different ways they could use them!!

When it was time for free choice I had to facilitate their play because so many wanted a turn with the new items! The children built and communicated about what their plans were. They also learned to share with a friend as well as figuring out personal space.

The children who were shy and quiet started to communicate more especially when using the play people. They enjoyed creating family units and setting up pretend play. There was fine motor involved as well! I can't tell you how much we appreciate everyone who donated to fund this project!!”

    With gratitude,

We are excited to add a few more items to our classroom! Our children learn through play while being engulfed in a language enriched environment. The children can build while engaging in conversations and turn taking. Our block center is a popular center so keeping the children engaged is important. It's very exciting to watch the children interact cooperatively while having meaningful conversations. The children love to build using all types of blocks, therefore, these items would be welcomed materials. The Tree House Builders and Flexible People Set will play many roles in our classroom. Many of our children have language deficits so we use materials like these to expand language and social/emotional skills. These materials will also encourage cooperative play and often teaches problem solving skills as well. Our ELL students will also benefit as they can use these materials to role play or parallel play next to their peers while learning the English language.
