Jobs of the future will require students to be problem-solvers, creative thinkers, team players and have stamina to identify problems and solve them with sustainable solutions. Gone are the days of training students for the Industrial Revolution jobs - assembly line workers with fast computational skills, ability to repeat patterns and take directions well. Today's students will need to be able to demonstrate empathy, be flexible in their thinking, identify problems and have the stamina to apply creative thinking and strategic thinking to solving the problems identified by their community.
Coding, is an opportunity to develop systematic thinking, develop creative solutions to problems and apply strategies in a hands-on way. Students as young as kindergarten are already familiar with the virtual world and enjoying instant gratification in games that are developed by publishers to grab their attention. Coding activities will help them develop the skills, strategies and mindsets to understand the development of those very attractive, engaging activities and develop their own.
If the world were a video game for our students, they would fail and succeed eagerly, they would develop stamina to see problems through to solutions, they would be motivated to seek the next level of challenge in a task and develop empathy for developing solutions to problems that appear in their path.
Coding the Ozobots to perform tasks, conquer obstacles and design structures will help students develop these essential strategies and skills that will make them marketable in an ever changing world - for jobs we can't even begin to imagine. Ozobots and the Rootbot curriculum will provide students of all grade levels varying levels of difficulty and tasks to develop strategies in these important areas of problem-solving, creativity and stamina.
