  • School Supplies for Home Learning!

    Funded May 5, 2020

Thank you so much for your generosity earlier this year when you gave to my DonorsChoose project. I was able to make up bags of school supplies for each of my first graders to help them finish out their school year after having to abruptly leave the comforts and routines of our first grade classroom due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I made up supply bags which included a notebook, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, a box of pencils, and a box of crayons. I delivered them and had small "sidewalk visits" with each of my students. The children were delighted to have this special treat of brand new school supplies--who doesn't love a new box of crayons or a brand new pencil?

The supplies that you donated enabled the children to participate in instruction even though we learned remotely from March through June. They were able to write and draw to show their learning, just like we did in the classroom. And one extra thing they learned was that there are kind people like you who want them to be successful students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Downing

  • Adopt a Mouse! And then some!

    Funded Dec 11, 2020

I can't even begin to express how grateful I am to you for your generosity and kindness! My students are so blessed to have you in their corner. It's been a tough year for all of us, but moments like this remind me that humankind is indeed KIND! Many blessings to you and yours during this holiday season!”

  • Remote Teaching Tech Tools and Good Old Fashioned BOOKS!

    Funded Sep 27, 2020

I am so grateful for your kindness and generosity! I know that getting books into the hands of my little ones will be extremely important! I will do this when I do my "sidewalk visits." And when I am teaching them remotely, it will be amazing to do that with a second monitor so I can see all of my wonderful first graders. YOU are amazing and wonderful, too!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Downing

  • Help My First Graders Access the World!

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donations that funded my Donors Choose project. These Chromebooks have been amazing to have in our classroom!

Some of my students use the Chromebooks to get on STMath--a really fun math intervention program we use at our school. Other students use them to get on Lexia, a reading intervention program that some of our struggling readers use.

We used the Chromebooks when we worked on our Nonfiction Chapter Books. They really came in handy for this project! We were able to use the Chromebooks to do research on our nonfiction topics. Each student got to print out one colored picture to add to their books. They loved adding actual pictures to their books!

I am so grateful for people like you who help kids like mine!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Downing

  • Dry Erase Markers and Bright Card Stock

    Funded Oct 24, 2019

I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am for your generosity in donating these basic supplies.

I use dry erase markers every day to teach my first graders. I love to use different colors when teaching math, for example, because it helps the children notice the important strategies I'm trying to teach them. It also helps their brains look for patterns.

The colored card stock is so helpful and so engaging. These little children love a pop of color whenever possible and putting some of their resources and instructional materials really makes them pay attention and focus.

Thank you so much for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Downing

  • First Graders Access the World with Chromebooks!

    Funded Sep 29, 2019

Thank you so much for helping me reach my goal to add technology to our classroom. My students face so many challenges every day and the fact that our school does not offer them the latest technology does not help.

My students are able to use these Chromebooks to go on learning sites like Lexia, BrainPop Jr, Epic, and RazKids. They are able to research topics for the nonfiction books that they're writing.

Another bonus to having these Chromebooks in our classroom is that the kids will have another year getting their hands on technology. Considering that our state's high stakes testing is now computer based, early exposure is so important.

Thank you so much for your support and generosity. I am grateful and my students are grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Downing

With a Chromebook, students can tap in to the power of the Internet—and because the devices include keyboards, they build essential keyboarding skills, required by the Common Core and many state standards, as they research, collaborate, learn, and create. The keyboard alone is a tremendous value as our students are now required to take their state tests on computers. I will be able to transform my classroom into a connected and collaborative learning center. Imagine! My first graders will be able to go on a virtual safari, or watch astronauts read books. They will be able to watch their favorite authors read books. The learning and the fun will have no limits!
