In order to understand the need for these items, I want you to know that many of my diverse students come from chaotic home situations and carry a great deal with them that prevents them from learning. This furniture will be used to create a special calming area in my classroom. It is a safe space for students to come in and talk when they are struggling or having a bad day. This will also serve as a comfortable space for students to sit when reading or working in class. I want students to know that when they come into my classroom that they are welcome, safe, and I am grateful to have them. I strive to create a stable, calming environment throughout my classroom. Students will be able to come in, put their feet up and if only for a short time, forget about the weight of their world outside of my classroom. The calming space will allow students to focus, work hard, and continue to progress toward graduation. We work in restorative circles each day in order to build and strengthen these young people. This furniture will give us a wonderful space that will allow to circle up and support and celebrate both strength and struggle. Inviting gestures such as flexible seating or calm down spaces can serve as motivation for students. Consistent support earns trust and respect which motivates students to work hard and show up. This is huge with my student population as many of them have experienced things the majority of us can never imagine. The furniture that I am requesting already has a space in my room and students are excited to transform the space! "They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel!" -Carl W. Buechner
