  • Japanese Language and Culture for Under-Served NYC Kids

    Funded Oct 8, 2018

My students and I have been enjoying our exploration of Japanese language and culture these past months. It has been so helpful for my students when learning the language to practice written Japanese in the practice books you donated. Also helpful are the illustrated hiragana books you donated because they highlight new vocabulary words as my students learn each new hiragana letter. My students have also been learning how to write basic kanji characters using these materials.

My students are infinitely curious and always have many questions to ask when learning each new topic in Japanese culture. We have focused on Japanese history, geography, architecture and design, and holidays. Discussing these topics has enriched my students intellectually. Not only are they learning about an important world culture, but they are also looking deeper into their home cultures and making connections between the two.

Lastly, a few of the students in this elective course have specific learning challenges. I have noticed that these students in particular have gained a confidence boost over these past months. They have been challenging their brains in new ways by learning how to speak and write a non-western language. I am extremely proud of their dedication and focus. Thank you so much for donating the materials that have contributed to their increased skills and confidence.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Keynan

Teachers at Village Academy MS share our passions with our students by teaching a "Mastery" course. The passion that I want to share with my sixth grade students is Japanese Language and Culture. Learning Japanese in college let me go on an exciting and once in a lifetime study abroad program in Japan. I want to open up this possibility to my students by exposing them to the language and culture while in middle school. The resources my students will need to begin learning Japanese are the "Japanese Composition Notebook" and "My First Hiragana Activity Book." These will help to make it fun to learn written Japanese.
