Our school is committed to supporting the emotional well being of all of our students. By funding this project, I will be able to fill my room with items to aid in sensory input. These items include: fidgets (stretch bands, Jacob's Ladder, squish balls, etc.), weighted lap pads, expanding spheres, and acupressure rings for student's fingers. The lap desks, clipboards, and beanbag chair will allow my students to work in a flexible seating environment. Students will have the opportunity to work in the space that best fits their needs. The floor lamp with acrylic shades will allow for my classroom to be lit without using harsh overhead lighting, which can be overwhelming to students with sensory needs.
In supporting our students' social and emotional skills, I require texts that include lessons and positive coping skills. I will be able to use the Anger Workbook, Conquering Negative Thinking, Social Skills Strategies, Everyday SEL in High School, and Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety to help my students work through a variety of teen struggles.
Lastly, my room will include various activities for students to use to be engaged in learning. Scattegories, Telestrations, The Game of Things, The and Ungame will allow my students a more relaxed situation to practice their patience and social skills. Life Skills card game, Mindfulness Matters, and Coping Skills Thumb Ball will allow the students the opportunity to practice emotional regulation skills they will learn in direct instruction lessons.
