  • Classroom Basics for Creating a Text-Rich Classroom

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

Thank you for helping my students create a text-rich classroom that celebrates multilingualism. Your donated materials such as paper, markers and multi-color index cards allowed students to display their learning in all of the languages represented in the classroom. This experience allowed newly arrived students, who are just beginning to learn English, an opportunity to contribute to the learning environment. Most importantly, all students really enjoyed working together in a more creative, low-stakes manners, which helped to build community in our classroom. Your materials will continue to help us maintain a culturally sensitive learning space that embraces multilingualism. Thank you for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gill

  • Ergonomic Equipment for Teaching Healthy Workplace Practices

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Your gift of ergonomic equipment for my Digital Applications classes has changed the keyboarding experience for my students. Students are now more engaged and have commented that they feel "professional" when working with the equipment. Since students take turns using the ergonomic stations, it provides an opportunity for the experienced students to take the lead in teaching others how to connect the equipment to the school laptops.

One of the best things about having the ergonomic stations is that it has helped students experience and internalize how the right equipment creates an efficient workspace, which can help to prevent repetitive strain injury (RSI) in the future. Our students use their school laptops daily for hours at a time, so learning how to prevent RSI is important skill that they will take into adulthood.

Additionally, being able to set up multiple stations at a time allows me to save a station for a student that may be having a bad day or having difficulty concentrating. However, once a student like this is working at an ergonomic station, they quickly settle into their lesson and the whole class becomes quiet. The only thing that you hear is the clicking of the keyboards. Thank you for this gift!”

    With gratitude,

  • Holding Fast to Dreams Through Internships

    Funded Oct 22, 2018

Your gift of career resource books that are written at a reading level accessible to newly arrived immigrants has been a dream come true for me since I started teaching the internship course four years ago. The immediate impact for my students is that they have relevant resources written at their independent and instructional reading level. What this sounds like in my classroom is the silence of students reading independently or the soft audible reading of partners. What this looks like in my classroom is one hundred percent engagement that results in vocabulary development and increased reading proficiency.

In the pictures I shared, my students were using the book Careers: The Graphic Guide to Finding the Perfect Job for You to complete a vocabulary building exercise where they identified tier 3 vocabulary specific to their internship. From the words they identified, they then used the text and/or a dictionary to find other words that share the same base or root word. The books have helped students to build their word knowledge, improve spelling, and, as one student commented, the books have helped them to be "better readers."

When my students learned that the portable career resource library was a gift from donors, they were surprised that people who did not know them would invest in their education. On behalf of my students, I thank you for supporting their education.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gill

Because I am a traveling teacher, my project is to create a portable career resource library with a Safco Wire Book Cart. The career resource books will be specifically for English language learners who are reading between a third and sixth grade level. Because books at this level are not readily available in a high school library, having a classroom library will allow me to provide my English language learners with reading materials at their independent and instructional reading levels. Appropriately leveled text is the absolute key to increasing student reading achievement and overall success in high school. Books about different careers are of high interest and essential to high school students who are preparing for their future. Students often do not know all the career options that are available and will use books such as Dream Jobs in Green and Sustainable Living or Dream Jobs in Human Services to explore options. Once students identify a career they want to learn more about, they will use the text to increase their technical knowledge, vocabulary, and reading speed.
