I teach in a high-poverty, urban, public school in Illinois. I have 30 students in my third-grade classroom who all read at very different reading levels. My students are motivated learners (they even want to come to school on Saturdays when we have programs). We do a lot of reading in the classroom. Just like adults, my students even have book clubs where they read the same book and discuss it together. We read out loud, with partners, independently, and in groups, but for some of my students reading is still very challenging. Many of my students do not have books at home or anybody at home with whom to read. They haven't found that character or book that really makes them WANT to read books independently.
