I want to give the students the chance at home to design and build after school hours. STEAM ~ Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics~ has become the new focus for our students. Funding this project will provide students with a brain builder bag to encourage STEAM activities at home. Brain Builder Bags will allow students to explore the world of design and engineering. I will be challenging students to build contraptions to race using instructions or their own creativity. The STEAM design process will be used during these challenges. Students will bring back their contraptions to race against other students that also took home builder bags. After the "testing" component has been completed the process of designing will be reviewed. They will have the opportunity to "re-design" their creation to adjust the design for more efficiency and productivity. Then race again! Students can also design their own creative projects with the Brain Builder Bags. They will develop their own "world" and promote it for the "Best Weekly Creation Contest". I will give them challenges they will need to complete. For example, when we are studying animals they will need to design their best animal. They will be able to ask questions of their peers and make adjustments to gain the most votes for the week. Development of these creations enhances students skills on the engineering and design practices which are set forth in the Next Generation Science Standards. Brain Builder Bag materials give the student extra time to experience designing therefore giving them a higher chance to reach success in other curriculum areas.
