My students have overcome great obstacles and taken a risk to get where they are, yet they still have a distance to go before reaching their goal of college graduation. Many kids come to our school with the preconceived notion that "someone else" will always be better. Having a silkscreen press to add class logos and designs to t-shirts,backpacks, jackets, socks, and any other items they can wear with pride, will give students ownership and build comraderie in celebrating all small through grand successes. Designing their own prints will motivate them to stick with it and push through. Too often there is little or no support at home, and many times it is my junior high students who are picking up their little brothers and sisters from elementary school, making dinner and getting them off to bed, while the adult(s), sometimes plural, are off working odd hours just to make ends meet. At the end of the day, having something tangible that they designed with creativity and support, will remind them they are someone who others can believe in, and they can trust in themselves to make their own successes. I am seeking a silkscreen press for incentives to encourage my students to persevere, and advertise their commitment to education at school and in the community.
