The 40 Book Challenge
Funded Oct 17, 2018Scholars have absolutely loved the new wave of books added to our classroom library. Because of these books, my students have been exposed to a larger selection of books to better aide their reading throughout the classroom. Some of the skills that students have been able to engage are dictionary skills, namely finding the context of an unfamiliar word and its meaning. Students get to engage in an activity called WordStar Wednesday where they use there JRBs (Just Right Books) to complete the aforementioned skill.
In my classroom, reading looks like fantasy, space, war, real-life, school, and dystopia because of the various stories my students get to read throughout their days. Students typically get 15-20 minutes of independent reading in the JRBs every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, followed by some type of book activity, such as a book talk or reader's response.
Before I announced to all of my classes the influx of new books, I had book conferences with a few students who were wondering if I had the next part or sequel to their current book. I was eager to sneak them peek of information, informing them that a new wave of books would be shipped to the class library, including the very book they were asking for! Because of this, the pacing at which students have been checking out and checking in books has increased. And I hope it continues as the year progresses.”
