In order to create an environment that is conducive to learning with students that have limited communication and reading skills I must adapt all curriculum materials. In meeting my students’ needs, I rewrite all curriculum reading materials. I also laminate, velcro, and incorporate tactile objects for students who have limited fine motor skills. All books must be reprinted in color with enlarged pictures. Since the Danielson model of instruction emphasizes questioning and discussion, I must create picture choice answers for every question during the lesson. The process of adapting materials for nonverbal students helps create multiple entry points, and promote student discussion. However, the process is overly time consuming, and the materials are costly. Unfortunately, our classroom has limited technology (no smart board), and inadequate space. An IPAD in the classroom would make learning more assesible, help cut my lesson planning time, and offer visual and auditory support for my unique students. Integrating this technology into the classroom would help connect students with all learning styles, and give them an opportunity to interact with their classmates by encouraging collaboration, and discussion. More importantly, it would help a group of students with difficult behaviors remain engaged and focused. Hopefully, it will help to decrease problematic behaviors that arise due to lack of communication.
