Varied learning styles requires there to be various learning materials within the classroom. Gone are the days of pencil and paper for kiddos to learn. So long to the days of rote memorization or repetitive writing/spelling to fully understand a concept. Hello to incorporating song, dance, eye catching handouts, colorful writing implements and so much more.
As the days of the school year have dwindled down, so have the supplies to make our learning space accessible for all. Our class learning style entails the use of crayons, pencils, sitting, moments of movement, etc. There are varying needs of the learners! Some students are more visual, and require the use of pocket schedules so they can physically see what their day consists of. For others, they have to move in order to concentrate so tinker toys or focus bands are necessary.
All of our kiddos utilize white boards and markers to show their work. It's a quick way for them to see what they're doing but also a way to directly measure what extra interventions are needed within the moment. Laminated signage shows our kids where certain material are within the classroom but also denotes what schedules they should be following. There isn't a color printer we can utilize as a school so we have our own for any handouts that require color denotation. When it's time to showcase their creativity, what better way to do so than with crayons, markers, and colored pencils? By giving my students access to the basics, not only are the foundations of their academic careers being built but we're also tapping into all materials that can help these love bugs learn effectively.
