Keeping a child’s attention on school work can be difficult for any teacher. Doing so when that child has autism, ADHD or some other disability can be even more challenging. Many of these kids have decreased muscle tone or a constant need for movement-based sensory input that contributes to fidgeting or slouching, making it difficult for them to engage in the learning environment. Active sitting is based on the idea that it’s not healthy for the body to be seated for long periods of time. Active seating corrects inattention difficulties by promoting slight movements and adjustments while the student sits. These small movements help keep the body engaged, alleviating the negative effects of prolonged sitting. All of these differentiated seating options, ball chair, wobble chair, and laptop table, will be available to every student who visits the Learning Center at our school, where special education students come for small group intensive instruction or to focus on 1:1 instruction and IEP goal work.
