When my students arrive to school each day, they come with the desire and motivation to learn. The school environment, however, bombards them with sounds, lights, words, and sensations to which they must constantly filter, regulate, and adapt. By the middle of the school day, the students are tired, anxious, and frustrated by all the sensory stimulation. These same experiences are a common frustration at home and in the community for students on the autism spectrum. These tools will offer my students an opportunity to learn how to self-regulate and self-advocate. The yoga mats provide a physical space on which the students practice this regulation. The sensory bin materials will provide the tools the students need to gain calming sensory input. Along with these tools, I plan to teach the students how to name this sensory break, how to ask for it, and how to bring their bodies from an escalated and uncomfortable sensation to a calm and regulated sensation. When students are able to self-regulate, they are more ready to learn academics in the classroom and engage in social interactions with peers.
