Independent practice and whole group instruction collide when all students are able to participate at once. We have been using individual white boards to practice math problems, spelling words, and science vocabulary. The white boards have some drawbacks. First, my left handed students are extremely frustrated because their hand erases the marker as they move across the board. Another issue is the huge cost and considerable plastic waste of dry erase markers. We spent most of our supply budget last year on markers for the white boards. Our garbage cans are constantly consuming dry markers, and the students have started worrying about our impact on the environment. The electronic writing tablets will eliminate the cons of using individual white boards by supporting left handed students, saving money, and decreasing plastic waste.
