There are numerous reasons why students have difficulty concentrating. Most of the students on my speech therapy caseload have diagnoses (e.g. ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down Syndrome, etc.) that negatively impact concentration. Some of my students can't concentrate due to excess energy, some need increased sensory input, and others would benefit from environmental postural support. Flexible seating options, like the seating options I am requesting, help keep students engaged longer by encouraging active seating postures. As the school's speech-language pathologist, I am teaming up with the school's occupational therapist to request flexible sensory seating for special education students who receive speech and OT services. By supporting this project, you're helping to provide the speech students and occupational therapy students with seating that has a direct impact on their availability to learn. Wiggle chairs, wobble cushions, kick bands, and kinetic sand allow students to fidget and wiggle so they are able to concentrate on the task at hand. It may seem counterintuitive that wiggling and fidgeting actually encourage concentration, but studies show that students learn better when they are physically active and comfortable. Ball chairs and textured wobble cushions provide crucial tactile input for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. With this input they are able to focus and achieve their goals. All of the requested seating options promote core strength which provides postural support. The items from this project will reach over 60 students with special needs that receive speech services and occupational therapy services. These students deserve an environment that provides them with every chance to succeed. I am very excited to see the huge positive impact this will have for these amazing students!
