  • They Shoot- They Score-They Soar

    Funded Oct 9, 2012

On a cold and rainy October morning, there was a real glow in our gym. Our grade 4-5 students had a chance to use the 'brand new' floor hockey equipment that had been delivered the previous day. We average 30-45 students in our morning recreation program. With floor hockey being played for the first time since school opened, our numbers soared to over 70 students.

The excitement was contagious! The children put their hearts and souls into the game and took extra special care of the sticks. They were headed back to class a little hot and sweaty but delighted and looking forward to using playing again soon.

Thank you for your generosity and support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Biesty

  • Shout! Shout! Knock Yourself Out.....

    Funded Dec 13, 2011

On any given day our gym is alive with the energy of anywhere between 30 t0 120 students. They come for Morning Program, Lunch Clubs, Cheerleading, After school clubs and of course Physical Education classes. Our gym is considered shared space in an urban school complex of nearly 2000 children. To be able to reach all the children in the gym is essential.

The shiny new microphone makes that possible. Our students hear us "Loud and Clear" as they like to say. In a great many ways, it eases the frustration of the day.

Thank you for your support and generosity to seemingly small project that has a great impact on our program. We 'sing' your praises daily! ”

    With gratitude,

  • Dream Like a Mover and Shaker

    Funded Dec 2, 2011

On any given day, our gym is a very busy place. We have activities that include movement and action games. Unfortunately, not every child is able to play. During the school year, we have the usual cold and flu. When you add sprains, broken bones and periods of recuperation;it is hard for kids to sit on the sidelines.

Our new cart is a HUGE hit with the kids who are not cleared to play. They have had input as to what would help them pass the time. Sports biographies are favorites, as are travel size board games. It is especially pleasing to see the children lean toward using the fitness and nutrition books and games.

Thanks to you and your generosity and support; our Physical Education classes are a great experience for ALL our students.”

  • We Like to Move It, Move It!

    Funded Dec 1, 2011

Your amazing support and generosity sets a new tone for our children and Physical Education classes. We have spent time loading the I-pod Touch with our favorite workout songs. When we have our run it is to Eye of the Tiger and the Theme from Rocky 1. The children look forward to what they call "Move It Move It" activity. It has everyone jumping side to side at the same time, and on cue they stop and move back while one student runs to the front of the line. On cue, they repeat the process. Our older students have added fist pumping to this regime. It is an amazing cardio workout. More importantly, it is fun.

The range of the use of the I-pod is limited only by our imagination. We will be using it portability for the NYC Fitnessgram, as well as, at holiday time the children will be transformed into human dreidels.

Due to your support, our children are on their way to feeling strong, fit and having fun.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Biesty

Our students are super kids who dream big and attend school of nearly 1000 students in an urban setting. Our school population is one where 98% of the families qualify for free or reduced school lunch. Our school has a special emphasis on fitness as a key to supporting learning. Even though we have been faced with a 17% budget cuts, we have a Morning Program that emphasizes physical activity for students in grades 4 and 5. There is daily lunch time recess in all kinds of weather. The children have an opportunity be part of lunch clubs many of which have movement and fitness as the theme. The children speak many languages at home but are fluent in the language of play at school.
