Family and Consumer Sciences classes are one of the only classes on campus that provide real-world experience that reaches and teaches all high school grade levels, all socioeconomic statuses, and all genders. Having a popcorn machine will give the students an opportunity to raise money for the classroom through popcorn sales. This will give the class a working budget for supplies that would not normally be provided by the school district. Each class will be tasked with running its own "business" with popcorn as its main item/product. Within each class, they can choose how to prepare, market, package, and sell their goods. All of these challenges must also cover proper safety and sanitation of food handling to meet the current COVID restrictions we have here on campus. They will be required to research, promote and job cost each plan. A prototype will be presented with possible financial outcomes prior to approval.
This will be a highlight of the day of each student attending my class. Supplies such as groceries, sewing equipment, and fabric for projects. Teaching our students how to cook and eat fresh foods will allow them to take better care of themselves and their future families.
FACS does not end at food & nutrition. Life skills, money exchange, marketing, job costing, profit and loss, interview skills, basic first aid, time management, stress management, and emotional wellness are just a few of the real-world skills that come out of this very important class. Without additional income streams, the class can not thrive to reach its full potential.
