When I greet my students at 8:25 a.m. on the playground, I can instantly tell that some of them are not excited and ready to learn. Many students come to school tired, hungry, and with the heavy burden of adverse childhood experiences that make it hard for them to learn. It is my job to help them overcome these challenges with a positive start to the day. This is where Morning Meeting plays a critical role. Students begin the day with 15 minutes of positive time together to build a sense of community and belonging, as well as energize their brains and bodies for a day of rigorous learning. With the addition of a sturdy rug, and Sit Spots for our meeting area, students will be able to feel a sense of security knowing there is place for them in the circle each day. Social/Emotional learning books will guide our discussion and help students learn to be in charge of their emotions/interactions with their peers throughout the day. In addition, a whiteboard, magnetic writing space, and teacher idea books will help me fulfill all of the steps of an effective morning meeting (Greeting, Sharing, Group Activity, Morning Message that ties to the curriculum or day's events). I have seen a positive change in our school climate since implementing Morning Meetings and I know these supplies will help enrich the experience for the students in my second grade class.
