A Teaching Cart to make Learning Accessible to All!
Funded Dec 1, 2021Although I was unable to receive the Teaching Cart, which was the initial intent of this project, the Donors Choose team supported me in choosing replacement materials for my classroom, all of which have been helping me bring engaging, hands-on and impactful instruction into my classroom.
One item I received, thanks to your generous donations, was a Listening Center. With this compact CD player, headphones and organizing station, my students have been able to listen and read along to diverse texts- nonfiction texts on preferred topics and leveled texts, to name a few. This has helped them strengthen their listening and comprehension skills during Literacy Centers, while building community with their peers as they listen along together.
The Take Home Pouches I received have become durable Book Baggies, where students place their books after book- shopping. These Book Baggies travel home with my students each night so they can practice reading daily.
Lastly, another product that had my students were super excited to unbox was the set of math counters. This library included everything from vehicles, dinosaurs, sea animals, insects to fruits and vegetables. These counters have helped my students develop one-to-one correspondence when counting during Math Lessons, pattern making, sorting, and has also provided endless fun, as they sometimes use them as a cool down during transitions.
I am immensely grateful to all of you for donating to my project and helping me to create engaging, effective and accessible learning for my students!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Eaton
This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 10 other donors. For the Love of Books
Funded Oct 8, 2018I cannot thank you enough for the ear-to-ear smiles that you put on the faces of my students! We are currently wrapping up our second reading unit, Reading Super Powers! Our students have been practicing reading behaviors and are working on tackling more challenging books. Each day, we practice reading in so many ways. We have private reading time and partner reading time, where students practice reading independently and to a partner. We also work on our reading skills during Literacy Centers each day!
One part of our daily routine that my Kindergarten students love the most is "Listening to Reading". At this center, they are given time to listen to an audio book using our classroom radio and headphones, while following along with a paperback version of the grade- appropriate text. With the sets of National Geographic books and CDs that my classroom received through this project (and your funding!), my students have been able to engage in Listening to Reading with a number of new texts, audio books and topics! Throughout the day, I have students asking me when we will practice reading, because they can't wait to learn about these new topics, including storms, animals or trains!
There is no better feeling, as an educator, than having a young student run up to you, enthusiastic and eager to share something that they learned with you while reading on their own. When we gave our students time to explore these new sets of books, we heard so many positive reactions, as they were accessing new information, pictures and words! "Ms. Eaton, look at this really old train!" "Well I didn't know that a storm can look like THAT!" "...but I wasn't finished reading, yet!"
It is these moments and opportunities that allow us to make meaningful connections with our students, to engage all of our diverse learners, to meet all of their needs as students, to create a love for learning, to develop intrinsic motivations and to create opportunities for success for our students! We look forward to continuing to explore and learn from these books with our class, and it wouldn't be possible without your help! Thank you so much!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Eaton
