Working with high school students who have experienced various forms of trauma, marginalization, displacement, and violence warrant periods of “Time Out”. Time out from academics and “Time In” for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Students require time to recognize, process and manage the emotions of the everyday racism, bullying, and rejection they experience. They need time in a safe and supportive school environment where they feel heard, valued and respected in order to cope with and grow from experiences of violence and trauma.
Time Out: Life Lessons Taught with Love is an opportunity for students to relax and spend time learning and reflecting on life lessons with compassionate, caring staff who are dedicated to providing the support and guidance they need to be successful in school and life.
The items chosen for the project will be utilized to create a multi-sensory experience for students. The aromatherapy diffuser, essential oils, comfortable chair, and speaker will help to create a relaxing and healing learning environment. The document camera will be used to project daily affirmations, quotes, and SEL case studies and lessons. It is important that students feel safe, and by intentionally targeting multiple senses, we can help create a calm environment different from other spaces within the school.
This is a critical project because students need spaces to refocus and collect themselves in order to learn throughout the school day. This project will help students do that through positive identity development and intentional spaces of calmness to support students' mental health. The more we acknowledge the benefit of SEL, the better we can support students. If we want students to succeed in college, career and life, we also have to prioritize their mental wellness. By investing in this project, you are investing in the future!
