The Sewing and Design Club is a student run organization where students can get together to learn to sew and create their own designer look. This club was started by a group of students who are interested in learning how to create unique styles and fashion statements! Our students want a chance to express themselves! Our school is located in an urban area and serves a wide range of families. Unfortunately, the school does not have the funds to support our club with the purchase of sewing supplies much less machines. Our club averages 22 students per week plus women from the community who are eager to learn to sew. We currently have six sewing machines- my own personal machine, plus others I was able to purchase at thrift stores. This means most of the students have to wait to use a machine each week, and the variety of machines means learning how to thread the machine, make a bobbin, or deal with other problems is more difficult. By having ten more machines to use the students will be able to pursue their passion while learning the fundamentals of sewing and design. For some these new machines will be a way to take hand-me-down clothes and make them fit their individual personalities. For other, it is pursuing a dream to create original designs for a fashion line.
