My classroom centers on discussion, research, and group work. Often, students misuse their time while using their phones for things that do not relate to their education and learning. Students will benefit from having a place to put their phone when they are struggling to self manage its use. This project will help my students learn how to disconnect from their phones and reconnect with their learning and each other. A cell phone locker will teach students how to manage their time in class and remove distraction when necessary. It is not only important to remove distraction, but to teach students how to appropriately self-manage their technology use. Removing the technology in entirety will not teach them how to manage its use. By introducing this locker, students will be in control of when their phone is locked up and will learn to self assess when it is necessary to do so. This is a skill that will not only lead to better outcomes in class, but in their lives beyond high school. Studies will begin to see just how much they rely on their phone for distraction and how much it detracts from learning and the social aspect of education.
