While I technically teach English Language Development, our school does this through academic content. This means I focus on academic vocabulary, sentence structure and communication through the teaching of science. My focus is on the emerging bilinguals in the class, but I teach science to the whole group, 5 classes in total. For our current unit, we are studying Geology, and there are some great local opportunities to explore! Portland is the only city within the continental United States to have a volcano within city limits! I am so excited to be able to take our kids to Mt. Tabor to learn with local geologists. Because rain is something you can count on in late November, I am hoping to get reusable ponchos so that all kids will be able to stay dry. Many children at Sitton come to school without weather-appropriate clothing, and a day spent hiking outside would be rough without proper attire. Rocks are the oldest collectibles. I have asked for kinetic sand and quartz crystals to give the kids as resources. Our unit explores the story of a rock as it transforms from a boulder into a grain of sand, and the last week of the unit will be dedicated to crystals and gems. It would be amazing to have something they could take home to start their own rock collections!
