Sound cards and tools such as cooperative games and mirrors are essential for productive learning opportunities for my articulation students. In my speech room, I will typically have small groups of students working on different sounds during sessions. We use articulation cards in so many ways! The kids love to play memory and go fish; we do flashlight card hunts; use cards to feed Ms. Munchie (our dressed up mini swing wastebasket); and will make silly sentences with cards to practice sounds in connected speech. Mirrors are a big benefit so they can see the way they are using their lips and mouths to make the sounds (and they really like to look at themselves)! Cooperative games add variety to sound practice and provided us the added benefit in turn taking and being a good team player. Multiple modes of feedback are important to help learn skills effectively. Struggling with articulation could not only have an impact on spelling and reading but noticeable articulation differences could also have negative social implications. Its really important students receive targeted interventions to be the best communicators they can possibly be!
