I am asking for the ETA hand2mind Math Fluency kit for my fifth-grade classroom to have a daily math routine to build number sense. Number sense refers to a child's fluidity and flexibility with numbers, the sense of what numbers mean and an ability to perform mental mathematics and to look at the world and make comparisons.
Number sense is not taught, it is caught. Through daily experiences with number talks and number strings, students can develop and build their number sense. Number sense is not taught as set of daily lessons, but rather caught after repeated exposure and experiences.
The Math Fluency Kit provides 180 daily fluency lessons through number strings and number talks to engage students in math conversations. Students who talk about math develop a deeper understanding of how and WHY math works, and not simply the basics of math!
My school district does provide a thorough math curriculum, but it lacks the developmental building of number sense. If a student is struggling in mathematics, it is more likely because of a lack of underlying number sense and not from a lack of instruction or skills. This is why I would like to receive funding for the ETA hand2mind Math Fluency kit--to bridge that gap of understanding mathematics!
