Scholastic Scope Magazine provides a year-long program that covers all areas of the language arts curriculum and builds proficiency in essential curriculum skills. These skills include reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing across a variety of genres. As students read nonfiction texts across a variety of subject areas in Scholastic Scope, they will develop content-area vocabulary and knowledge in science, math, social studies, and other curriculum areas. My students will learn to navigate complex informational and narrative nonfiction texts. They will explore topics across two or more genres that will require them to synthesize, analyze, and make meaningful cross-curricular connections. They will also build argument writing skills with debates presented in each issue. In addition to the print magazine, there are videos, audio articles, and activity sheets available on line in two or more levels that allow for differentiated instruction. Navigating nonfiction text is essential for students to become successful readers. Scope provides a diverse array of learning experiences to support the various learning styles and needs of my students. Research shows that classroom magazines benefit students in many ways including increasing motivation, reinforcing skills, and encouraging students to be active participants in their reading development.
