Readers are Leaders!
Funded May 2, 2020This has been a crazy year for educators and our students. I wish I could detail the many amazing ways I have been using the books you funded through my project, however, my students have barely been inside my classroom. When we began a hybrid model of instruction, I set up a library checkout system in my classroom. I displayed and previewed several of the books and as students became excited about various titles, I shared the books with them. They have checked them out and have been reading them at home and returning them when finished.
In our reading curriculum, we use several read aloud texts to expose our students to a variety of styles, themes, and cultures. I absolutely love the read alouds! We also do mini-lessons to develop reading skills such as word solving strategies and literary analysis. The days we do have our students in our classrooms, we do guided reading in small groups to provide a time for more individualized coaching and practicing of the skills we have learned. Finally, independent reading is a critical component. That is where the books you purchased come in. They are interesting, relevant, award-winning texts that are of high interest to my students.
All of my students who have borrowed books from the set have enjoyed them. Thank you so much for helping me build my classroom library and get high-interest books in the hands of my students. You have certainly made a positive difference.”

Mrs. Lawson
Classroom Must-Haves
Funded Jul 29, 2020Thank you so much for your donation of classroom supplies. When you teach in an area where there are several students who come from low-income families, it is such a blessing to be able to relieve some of their burden by providing them with supplies. A student should not have to worry about coming to school or functioning in the classroom if they do not have a pencil, paper, a dry erase marker, a highlighter, and the list goes on. Just to be able to say, "I have what you need, don't worry," is such a gift. Furthermore, being able to pass out the same highlighters and expo markers to everyone or the same pencils helps to level the playing field. One of the highlights of this project has been the fancy pencil sharpener, which not only fascinated the students because it has a little light when the pencil is sharp, but it has made my life easier as well! I cannot thank you enough for your generocity.”

Funded Sep 12, 2019Thank you so much for funding my project! Providing Chromebooks for the students in our school has made such a positive impact on their learning, and it is because of your generosity that this is possible. Integrating Chromebooks into our classroom provides students with access to engaging learning programs, allows for differentiation based on student abilities and interests, and gives them technology skills they need to be successful in the future.
Students in my class start the day with a math fact fluency program as part of their morning work routine. We have three functioning desktop PCs, but the additional Chromebooks allow students to circulate through this fact fluency center quickly so that we do not waste instructional time in the morning. When I meet with groups in the morning to do vocabulary building activities, the other students are on Chromebooks completing assignments in a program called IXL that is aligned with state and national standards. I use this to reinforce concepts that I am teaching during the week. In my afternoon learning centers, I use programs that differentiate lessons based on student test scores, provide leveled reading passages, articles, and books, allow students to create writing pieces, play math games, and create projects. While some students are on Chromebooks, I am able to work in small groups with the other students, which is my favorite way to instruct and it is so much more effective than whole group instruction.
Many of the students in our school come from low-income homes, are raised by grandparents or other relatives. They do not have access to technology outside of school except for maybe a cell phone or a tablet. When students leave my classroom, they are familiar with the programs in the Google suite and they are much more comfortable navigating the Internet for research and typing. This knowledge as a 10-year-old will be a great foundation for them as they continue their education. It will help close a gap they may be created by their socioeconomic status or living situation.
Again, I cannot tell you how excited I am to have Chromebooks in my classroom. Thank you for making it possible!”
