Autistic students and students with intellectual disabilities are sometimes characterized by underdeveloped social skills. Play can be an amazing way to begin to help them develop socially. Not to mention, play is an important way to allow them to exercise so oxygen used can stimulate their brains as we prepare other learning opportunities for them. The climb and crawl tunnel will challenge them physically while they play and enjoy themselves. The sand pale and bubble bucket will give us opportunity to engage them in turn taking and also allow them to see how their play can be meaningful those students who are waiting for their turn next as well. Cooperative play and turn taking will empower them to better interact with others which will help insure a much better tomorrow as they continue their educational journey and even into life situations after school. It is not possible to understate the importance of social growth for these wonderful students. Frankly, their future rests in the success of how we as teachers/staff can help them interact in a positive and meaningful way with each other and with their non-disabled peers. The items requested will be used with other methods we already employ. Together, we can help my students build a better future by helping them grow socially.
