My goal is to be able to have a classroom camera for each student to use, so we don't have to swap cameras. Both the PhotoJournalism students and the Newspaper staff use our cameras, and we are critically limited. Currently, three students share each camera I have, and that really limits what the students can do. It also increases their frustration, because they see potential shots but cannot act on them. That needs to change. They need to make tons of pictures; the experimentation is by far the best way for them to learn. PhotoJournalism is like a lab, just outside in the world. When you put a good camera in a student's hands, you find an artist; they suddenly look at the world in a new way. I constantly encourage them to take risks and try new things, and they do. They learn so much as technology and artistry come together. Once they figure out the basics of the equipment, they take ownership of what they're doing. I find they create some wonderful things. As a teacher, it is incredible to experience.
