Distance Learning is a challenge for teachers, students, and parents/guardians. These materials will be divided up among my students into home-learning kits to help support them as they tackle having to review skills previously learned, understand new mathematical concepts, and strengthen their reading and writing abilities all from home. White boards are essential for student practice, whether they are writing complete sentences or showing their work with a picture and matching equation. I normally use white boards daily in my teaching, and it would be no different even in distance learning. The manipulatives (i.e., counters, mini clocks) that will be included in their kits target my students' need for hands-on learning, especially for abstract mathematical concepts. Index cards will be used for my students to create their own flash cards when learning parts of words, such as prefixes, and sight words, which are words they should be able to recognize immediately without having to sound out the letters. They can also use the cards to organize their ideas when writing in paragraph form. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards will go towards purchasing printable materials to support their reading skills (e.g., phonics activities, leveled readers, reading comprehension passages). By donating to this project, you are bridging the first large gap between traditional in-person learning and distance learning for my students with special needs. With these materials, they will be much more prepared for successful learning at home. Without having to worry about supplies, we will be able to focus on teaching, learning, and developing strong, positive relationships regardless of distance.
