  • New Forensic Science Lab Projector

    Funded Sep 13, 2019

In Forensic Science we study evidence, such as hair, fibers, fingerprints, and analyze documents. In laboratory exercises we examine this evidence on a macroscopic and microscopic scale; for the most part in between using a magnifying glass or hand lens. Traditionally students would sketch what they observed. Frequently students would struggle with this part. When you generous donation on the projector project I was able to source a handheld digital microscope. With the combination of the portable projector and the digital microscope I was able to create a mobile lab workstation for the students so that they could explore and display their lab experiments to the rest of the class.

With the portable projector we are also able to project crime scene search patterns when we move out of the classroom to "mock crime scenes" created in meeting rooms and this year on the auditorium stage.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Brown

  • Forensic Science "Clue Board Game Challenge"

    Funded Nov 16, 2018

We use the Clue board games to explore deductive reasoning in our study of Forensic Science. I modified the Clue tally sheets to require the students to created a code and a key for the students to use as they eliminate suspects, weapons, and locations. I introduced the new game boards to the class by leaving clues around the classroom and surprising the class with a reveal of opening the boxes. Students who were fans of Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Rick and Morty, The Walking Dead, Harry Potter, and the Prisoner of Zelda were really exited to set up the for the first time. The students are allowed to play the game at the end of a unit when all of their other assignments are complete.

Thank you so much for your generous donations! Forensic Science students at Lincoln Park High School will be enjoying playing and learning for years and years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Brown

These board games will allow students to explore the full range of crime scene analysis, deductive reasoning, and solving crime in a virtual world, on the board game rather than reading case files or analyzing documentary films. I believe that students will even find the experience more interesting and engaging than similar online laboratory exercises. Forensic Science is an elective interdisciplinary course students take during their junior or senior year. Since several students a year are deciding to make forensic science, law enforcement, or criminal law a career we focus on the core content of forensics for most of the year. Deductive reasoning is covered in the introduction to the class, but I would like to continue to engage the students in these skills throughout the year. Utilizing entertainment themes such as "Game of Thrones" or "Star Wars" will engage students to recall deductive reasoning skills they learned at the beginning of the school year. By exploring gathering evidence and using the processes of elimination the game playing lessons will reinforce the critical thinking.skills of reasoning which will prepare them for college and their careers. I will further be engaging the students by creating an inquiry based lesson to go along with playing the game in the classroom lab.
