There's a reason the graphic novel section has the highest turnover in the library. Graphic novels provide a highly visual entry point to the world of reading. They offer an ideal balance between a more sophisticated story with the added built-in exposition of story panels. For children too old for the simple stories of early reader picture books, but frustrated by the complexity of chapter books, graphic novels bridge that gap beautifully. For many of our reluctant readers, who were ready to give up on trying, a graphic novel, with its vivid illustrations and word balloons to help blaze a trail of comprehension, can be the superhero of a book that makes them love reading. Many of our students have no books in their home at all. Fostering a love of books for children with so little incentive to read at home requires creativity and a willingness to provide them with the books they really want to read. Their initial attractiveness to reluctant readers, as well as the compelling stories that keep them coming back, make graphic novels are the super heroes of the media center.
