  • Wobble! Wiggle! Learn!

    Funded May 5, 2021

Our new wiggle, wobble chairs have arrived! The students were so excited to see them when they walked in the door. We have been using these chairs in a variety of ways. Students are able to use them when working at their desks providing a way to move and rotate their bodies while focusing on their work. Many children prefer using them on the carpet area of our classroom though, so that they can improve their focus and fidget during class discussions and read alouds. Finally, students also use them to lay on top of (which I found a surprising use but one I'm glad they enjoy) while doing reading or work on their iPads.

Being able to have these chairs in my classroom means so much to me! Students can continue their learning in a way that is a little more fun and engaging. With all the restrictions and social distancing, these enable to the kids to have some fun and choice in their seating. I also know as someone who has taught in early childhood, that kids need to MOVE! Their little bodies need chances to increase that core stability and shift around in a way that is not a distraction to others.

Thank you again for your contribution to my classroom. Our school is one of the most diverse in our district, with one of the highest poverty percentages. Through your contributions, my students see that they MATTER. It truly is making a difference.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harris

  • Books for Every Learner!

    Funded Sep 18, 2018

Thank you so much for your contribution to our class learning. These books make a direct impact on student learning by allowing them access to interesting books that also at their reading level. Students pick one book each night to read at home and then read it again at school. This daily practice enables them to build reading skills like understanding stories, building accuracy strategies (like sounding it out, go back and re-read, and using pictures to figure out the word.) Because of your donation, I was able to purchase storage bins to store my new books (which allows for easy access for the kids and for me!) I was also able to get science nonfiction books about animals and funny comic style books that tell fairy tales in a new and engaging way. The kids love being able to choose each night and are developing a love for reading that will follow them throughout their lives.

Thank you for making a difference for these kids and for giving them a chance to read every night!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harris

Every child deserves the chance to feel successful as a reader! Sadly, many of my students do not have access to books at home. I work in a low socio-economic school with over 70% of my students receiving free or reduced lunch. Their families do not have the money to spend on books. That's why I have implemented a Take Home Reading program that ensures every child in my class has a book to read even at home (that is also at their level!) Reading is a fundamental piece of a child's education and it starts in first grade! I want my students to not only have the experience of feeling successful in reading and understanding books but also that love of reading that comes when you encounter that "just right" book that is not only accessible to your reading level but also your interests. I know my students love to learn about science. They love animals and have so many questions about how things work. These guided science readers give them that chance to learn from books while also reading. The comic book readers are also really engaging and a fun way for my sillier students to engage with texts. I want to show them that reading opens doors to all sorts of fun stories! I have also requested the book bins to keep these resources well organized and easy for my students to access. They are able to choose from their level what book looks interesting to them so that they are also taking charge of their learning and seeing how powerful and fun it can be to read!
