This is my first year teaching in the Philadelphia School District! I am lucky to have a large room with tables and access to water for my science classroom this year. Unfortunately, I have not been given any scientific equipment to use with my 7th grade students. In 7th grade we learn basic physics and chemistry concepts like properties of matter, forces in motion and fluids, and heat and heat technology. This equipment will help us conduct hands on learning experiments to build a better understanding of scientific concepts. In addition, some of my students have never used basic laboratory equipment in their classes and I hope this year will be the first time they get the opportunity to. This exposure to beakers, graduated cylinders, and other basic lab equipment will help them gain the necessary knowledge they need to be ready for high school science. Finally, many of my English Language Learning students learn better from seeing demonstrations of scientific phenomena. Being able to learn the term "boiling point" in English will come a lot easier when they can physically see boiling water in a 400ml glass beaker.
