  • (Sort of) Healthy Snacks for Weekly BSU Meetings

    Funded Nov 20, 2024

A fair number of our students forego lunch during the school day, so the snacks filled an essential need. The quantity purchased tided us over for three or four meetings and helped to cut down a bit on members going out to the deli and missing the opening part of the meeting. While our time together is low-key and voluntary it's best for group cohesion to keep as many in the room as possible and also for those who are hungry to not watch peers snacking. Thanks again, please be on the lookout for our next request!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stevens

  • New York Debaters Need Expando Files!

    Funded Dec 17, 2009

I have to say that these file folders are probably the single most important donation my team has yet to receive in terms of the immediate impact it has had on the performance of the debaters. This is about a lot more than just arguing and winning, which we have been doing a lot of, by the way. Twenty one debaters are headed to States! It's more about putting the youngsters in a position where they can learn how to take responsibility for their development. Organization is key and I can only re-emphasize my gratitude to all of you for delivering more than just materials that have taught the kids how important organization is in life. You have contributed to the tone of excitement and importance of what the debaters are doing because your expandos, each time we use them, indicate that people out there, far away who will never come to a debate tournament, care about and support the work these kids in Brooklyn are doing.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stevens

  • Brooklyn debaters need timers and flow pens!

    Funded Aug 24, 2009

The timers and pens you so generously provided to my school's debate team have helped out so much! Now the debaters can see how much time they have remaining on the extra-large timer screens more naturally, with just a glance, as opposed to squinting at a tiny watch or screen and interrupting the flow of their speeches. The pens are very high quality and dependable. The most important thing is that we have a sense that someone out there (YOU) has invested in our team, that we are expected to take good notes and deliver effective speeches not just as a part of our team culture but by individuals and organizations in society at large. THANK YOU!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Stevens

Dear Prospective Donor, High school debate rocks! At my school the debate team is a place where the diversity and intellect of our youth is on full display. Current topics include ways to improve federal anti-poverty programs and the pros and cons of standardized testing as requirements for high school graduation. Though I remain in love with the work I do in the classroom (teaching AP World History) in my thirteen years of teaching I seen students learn the most when they decide to debate. This is an activity where young people can channel their innate drive to question an opposing idea into a structured setting where evidence, wits and organization of ideas are matched against that of their peers from across New York and, at larger tournaments, the nation.
