There’s a wonderful Norwegian saying – “Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!” which translates to “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes!”. Our Early Childhood students participate in 1 hour of gross motor time a day. Since we live in the state of Nebraska, our weather can often be very unpredictable and we can not always get outside. Our winters can get long and having appropriate clothing would provide our students the opportunity to get outside and enjoy it. I would love to have snow pants to provide my students the opportunity to go outside on a regular basis. Playing outside in winter presents its own unique opportunities for exploration and learning. Therefore, outdoor play should be embraced in all types of weather, as it is crucial for children’s ongoing development. My students can be provided opportunities such as learning about the seasons and the life cycles of plants on our playground. Through outdoor play in the winter, children also learn to see their environment through a different lens, and progress from being unconscious to conscious observers of their environment. With 68 students in our program, the snow pants will be a shared resource so that many children can benefit from this great opportunity and learning experience.
