  • Welcome Back to School Supplies

    Funded Jul 23, 2024

Our classroom started the year well stocked! We appreciate all the great materials that we have in the room. Our class has been off to a great start with hands on learning materials.

We have been participating in weekly domestic maintenance lessons. Students have been working on independently following 3-4 step directions. The Students enjoy achieving this goal by making simple recipes like macaroni and cheese and mug cookie cakes.

Students also have been enjoying reading the leveled reader books. These books cover a variety of topics and really meet student interest and reading levels.

Many thanks for supporting student need!”

    With gratitude,

  • STEM Materials for the Classroom

    Funded Dec 31, 2023

Thank you for your donation to support the autistic support students in my classroom. We have enjoyed the various STEM projects.

My class has been enjoying learning to make small items in the microwave independently. They have really enjoyed mug cakes, as well as mashed potatoes. It is giving them independence to learn to follow a 3-4 step recipe.

The students have also enjoyed having an edible garden in the classroom. We prepared the soil and planted the seeds. There was so much excitement when the seeds first sprouted.

Thank you for giving our class these exciting opportunities!”

  • Individualized Learning

    Funded Nov 4, 2023

The materials in this project have provided my students with the materials that they each need to learn! Thank you so much for your donation to this project.

Many of my students struggle with reading skills. The headphones in this project help them listen to stories online, as well as read along with passages in an online reading intervention. Two students are learning to read CVC words and benefit from practicing with the games.

The money student pack and money folder games have been great for practicing our money handling skills. This is a such a valuable lesson for independent living.

The pencil sharpener, wipes and pencils are all the basic materials needed to keep out classroom running smoothly.”

  • Hands-on Learning

    Funded Mar 17, 2023

Our class really enjoyed the great materials that we received in this Hands-on Learning project. The materials allowed the students to practice a variety of skills that will either help them in their own homes or in a vocational setting.

The project included a set of materials needed to plant an herb garden. The students loved the little pellets that expanded to make soil for the seeds. Once the pots were ready, the students planted the seeds and labeled each pot. A few days later the seeds sprouted. Students could smell and tasted the herbs as they grew.

The students also made their own bird houses. Creating the birdhouses allowed the students to practice using a variety of tools. Students had to hammer together the frame, glue in the bird rest, and screw on the hooks. Once the birdhouses were assembled, the students added their personal touch by painting them.

The final project was sewing little creatures, which was so much fun!”

  • The Giver: A Class Set

    Funded Nov 12, 2022

Our class has been so excited to study The Giver. This is a novel about a dystopian future from a teenagers perspective. Prior to reading this novel we discussed the difference between a utopia and a dystopia. We talked about common elements found in dystopian novels.

Our class is an autistic support class with 8 students. We have been working on reading the Giver as a novel study. We read a couple chapters a week and discuss what is happening in the book. Students also have a listening station where they can hear the book being read aloud.

Some of the students can really relate to the main character in The Giver. The young man Jonas is struggling with what to do with his future, just as the students in my class are trying to figure out what they will do after from High School. Jonas is tasked with a heavy weight of holding the collective memory of his community. Many of my students can relate as they have responsibilities and experiences far beyond most teenagers.”

  • Clean Space. Clear Mind.

    Funded Jul 5, 2022

The students in my class are so happy in the community that "Clean Space. Clear Mind," helped to create. The room is clean and welcoming. Students have the piece of mind that the space is as germ free as possible.

Our room has all the supplies that students need. The students especially love the new headphones. They use the headphones to access online reading and math programs. One of the students realized features that I did not even know that they had.

The new letter set has helped to implement a new phonics program in the room. Students spell out words on their desks. Overall, very successful project. I greatly appreciate your support”

  • Listening and Learning!

    Funded May 8, 2020

I am really excited for these new headphones. During the COVID 19 closure, I have been learning so much new technology. I am sure when we are back in school this fall, I will be bringing this technology to the classroom. These headphones will help students listen to books and participate in a variety of learning activities.”

  • Expand Your Mind, Read a Book!

    Funded Aug 23, 2019

My Life Skills Support special education classroom is really enjoying our new books and CD players for audio books. Finding good books for middle school students who are reading significantly below grade level can be challenging. The books written on a kindergarten or first grade reading level are written for the interests children ages 4-6. The students in my class are ages 11-15. This projects has given them two pathways to more age appropriate reading material.

The project provided leveled readers on various non-fiction topics. There are books on weather, animals, careers, and other scientific ideas. The topics in these books are the same topics being studies by their same age peers throughout the school. They have practiced skills like finding the main idea and supporting details. There have also been opportunities for students who are emergent reader in my class to read to other students in the class using these books.

Another part of the project was to provide portable CD players to allow students to listen to books that they may not yet be able to read. This allow students to access literature that is closer to their grade level. My students have enjoyed listening to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Tales of Droon. This project has helped the students in my class to benefit from the joys of reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Browne

The students in my classroom are on a variety of reading levels. It is important to have books that are on the students' individual levels. Having a leveled non-fiction library will allow students to read books independently to expand their knowledge independently. Literacy is a key skill for these students. Many students in this class have difficulty finding books that interest them that they are able to read. Many of the books on their independent reading level are written for younger students and do not hold their interest. The leveled non-fiction library and the use of CD players to read audiobooks will give the students access to information and great stories.
