My students are curious, high energy children who love to be engaged through hands-on learning. They arrive at school every day happy, positive, and ready to learn regardless of the challenges they face. Many students in my classroom have been diagnosed with various disabilities including learning difficulties, ADHD, and autism, and many have sensory issues. My students feel successful through differentiation of academic material and would benefit from modifications to their learning environment with the integration of iPad technology in our classroom.
The iPad is one tool that is many tools. It supports students with varying learning abilities while targeting those with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic needs. In reading, the iPad supports my students with fluency and comprehension skills. It supports my visual learners with animation and visuals and the font size can be adjusted to support my students with poor vision and dyslexia. My kinesthetic students love the interactive reading apps and they help keep them focused and engaged. A big challenge for my students is building their stamina and the use of iPads and technology is one of the biggest supporters of this. In writing, students can improve their writing skills by practicing their editing, improving their grammar, and building their vocabulary. In math, many of my students need support in improving their basic foundational skills. iPads provide a fun and interactive way for students to improve their math fluency while promoting self-confidence. The most beneficial feature of the iPad is the recording feature. Students can review lessons taught that need to be re-taught to better understand a concept and they can do this independently and at their own pace. In this technology-driven world, any interaction with updated technology will greatly increase my student’s literacy and increase their desire to learn.
