  • For The Love of Reading: Building A Graphic Novel Collection

    Funded Mar 31, 2021

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank you for donating graphic novels to the PS 112 school library. As the school librarian at PS 112, my primary goal is to help students find the pure joy of reading. Many of our students a English Language Learners. Additionally, a large percentage of our students have language processing delays. A significant percentage of our students are on the Autism spectrum. Finally, the vast majority of our students live at or below the poverty level. With all of these challenges, it is absolutely vital that I give my students access to quality books that will engage them completely without also frustrating them. Learning to read is not easy for a large number of these students. Graphic novels fit the bill perfectly. Because the reader is asked to read the pictures as well as the words, students are sharpening their literacy skills without even realizing it. Additionally, they are enjoying the story without being put off by having read many paragraphs of text.

The new graphic novel section is the most popular section with our first and second graders! The goal of engaging students in reading through graphic novels has absolutely been met! Favorites include the Zita the Spacegirl series by Ben Hatke and the Babymouse series by Jennifer Holm.

Once again, thank you so much for helping me to inspire the next generation of readers!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Feldstein-Gardner

The number one goal of the PS 112 School Library is to develop a love of reading! To do this, especially given our population in which so many students are English Language Learners and such a large percentage struggle with language processing delays, it is vital to provide my students with highly engaging books whose stories center on images as well as words. All readers including struggling readers gravitate towards graphic novels because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book. Students who read these graphic novels find reading fun and begin to read more for enjoyment! Graphic novels are a gateway to developing a love of reading for reluctant readers. It is so important that we get graphic novels into the hands of these new readers!
