As English language learners, having access to diverse types of materials along with multiple modes to present information is key to their language development. Technology is a helpful resource to encourage language development. However, it is a tool that many of our students don't have access to at home, and have limited access to at school. Moreover, technology is a great way to motivate and engage students while also building skills that will become increasingly important as the digital age moves forward. We will use these items to help promote language development. Students will work on a variety of apps and interfaces independently in the ENL room with limited distractions. Doing so allows the ENL teacher pull more students. While some work independently on the iPads, others will participate in small-group lessons with the teacher, and then switch. Additionally, these iPads would be an amazing tool for many of our newcomers, who are typically in the older grades but have very limited English. These students could use the iPads in their classrooms as a translation tool to help them communicate with peers and teachers. This, in turn, would promote positive relationships and ease the transition to a new school (and country). Those are just a few examples of how we will use the iPads, but the possibilities are endless.
