Our school colors are blue and gold. We are the BC "DOLPHINS". One thing our school is lacking is a school store. My proposed project would include opening a school store which would not only increase school spirit but also provide training for the transition skills needed, from high school to adult life, for our special education students. Students will learn academic, social, and career readiness skills by designing, creating, marketing and producing products to sell in a school store. By starting a design business in our school, my students would get to work with general education students in a "unified" setting to develop opportunities to learn about different careers through hands-on experiences.
As a special education teacher, I often think of life skills that my students need to have before they leave our school, in order to be as successful as possible, as an independent citizen. Skills that come to mind are the ability to count and save money, understand proper budgeting, and the ability to communicate and collaborate with others. This school store project would allow students to experiment with designing to personalize school supplies while working in an actual "safe, unified, school workshop" atmosphere. Students will also learn from teachers and general ed students communication, accounting, stocking, problem solving, marketing, and critical thinking skills. This will assist students to feel confident and advocate for themselves once they graduate from high school and become independent. This project would develop school spirit as well as self-confidence for the kids who made it because they see their products being purchased and know they made it!
